TL;DR: Don't order in the cold, and a mature tank is best.
I ordered these shrimp once in February. Aqua Huna claimed that the shrimp could handle the cold on the website, so I figured it would be ok. Unfortunately, it was severely cold in my area at that time. Even worse, the delivery person left the package in a cold entryway rather than in my heated lobby. About 1/3 of the shrimp were dead on arrival (DOA), and the rest didn't acclimate to my tank after a week or two even though I followed the acclimation instructions.
That said, I figured I would try them again. This is my first caridina species, but I read that they are quite hardy. An extra two months of tank age, plus much milder weather has given me much better results. Despite one DOA shrimp, I haven't noticed any more deaths since adding them, and slowly but surely, they are becoming more and more comfortable with active grazing during the day.
They are a really cool species! Although they are not colorful like some species, I love the striking zebra striped pattern and their orange eyes. They look stunning while also retaining a natural appearance. I can't wait until they start to breed.
